TOKYO - A devastating tsunami triggered by the biggest earthquake on record in Japan looked set to kill at least 1,000 people along the northeastern coast on Friday after a wall of water swept away everything in its path.
Thousands of residents were evacuated from an area around a nuclear plant after radiation levels rose in the reactor, but there was no word on whether there had actually been a leak.

London mother fears for son in Japan
Unable to sleep, Stephanie Donaldson turned on the television at 3 a.m. Friday to a nightmare.

Knowing her son is in Japan as team physician for the U.S. Paralympic men's sledge hockey team, Donaldson's heart dropped.
"I was like 'oh, no,' worried about he and the team," the Grand Bend woman said Friday.

157 collisions due to winter storm
As of 10 a.m., OPP across the region reported 157 crashes, mostly resulting in property damage and only a few involving injuries, none serious.
Police are urging the public stay inside their vehicles or go off the road so they aren't injured in secondary crashes.
"Again, we're reminding motorist of the importance of slowing down or avoiding driving during winter storms," said Sgt. Dave Rektor.
"We are asking motorists to limit travel today to necessary travel only "
Snowfall warning
Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for London at 4:42 a.m. Friday , forecasting that the city and area could receive another 5 to 10 centimetres of snow on top of the 5 to 10 centimetres that hit over night.
The snow is expected to taper off Friday afternoon or early in the evening.
There is a flood advisory for streams in the area and slippery road conditions.
Hwy. 4 is closed at Exeter as winter hammers the area again.
