One dead, two seriously wounded in prison fight

KINGSTON, Ont. — One inmate is dead and two others are in hospital with serious injuries after a fight at Millhaven Institution Sunday night.
Shots were fired as correctional officers moved in to break up an altercation in the gymnasium of the prison’s maximum security unit.

Jordan Trudeau, 29, was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. He arrived at the prison May 12, 2010, to begin serving eight years for robbery and accessory after the fact.

Coffee shops feel the grind of price hikes

 Many Londoners can’t face the day without their favorite brew. But lately there’s been more buzz about coffee than just the caffeine.
In 2010 the price of Arabica beans (used to make specialty coffee) soared. This trend has continued into 2011 and those in the coffee business are feeling the burn.
According to the International Coffee Organization’s (ICO) February report, Arabicas are averaging over $2.80 per pound – a 75 percent increase from this time last year and the highest since 1977.

Sarnia rd bridge closing for construction

After more than a century of carrying cars, pedestrians and, in its earlier days, buggies over the CP Rail tracks, the Sarnia Road bridge is officially closing to traffic between Wonderland Rd. and Hyde Park Rd. on Monday at 7 p.m.
Construction of a new bridge is scheduled to begin pending council's approval of the contract for road improvements Monday night.
The $15-million span is replacing the single-lane structure, considered a traffic nightmare by most drivers.

 

Baby Jospeh to get tracheotomy today

Baby Joseph is expected to get a long-awaited tracheotomy Monday morning in an American hospital.
The surgery, in which a surgeon makes an incision in the infant's throat to insert a breathing tube, was to have begun around 9 a.m., Brother Paul O'Donnell said.
O'Donnell was among the first to learn when an arrangement was underway to move 13-month-old Joseph Maraachli from London Health Sciences Centre to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Teen dead in collision

A teenage driver is dead following a car crash east of Palmerston on Sunday.
Around 6:30 p.m. a westbound sedan carrying three passengers lost control on Line 92, entered the ditch and struck a utility pole, said Perth County OPP.
The 17-year-old female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Two teenage passengers were taken to hospital but didn't sustain any injuries.
Line 92 was closed until 1 a.m. Monday morning while OPP investigated the crash and the car was removed.

Body found, identified as escort.

TORONTO — Police in Ontario are asking for the public's help to track the final moments of an escort's life.
On Sunday, provincial police identified remains found March 17 in Caledon, Ont., located northwest of Toronto, as those of 20-year-old Kera Freeland.
The woman had last been seen in Toronto's Lake Shore Blvd. W. and Queens Ave. area on Jan. 15.
She was working at Cachet Ladies, an escort agency, where she used the name Chloe.
According to media reports she may  have been pregnant.
