Mental hospital awards $830M contract

St. Joseph Health Care has awarded a contract for a new $830 million mental health care facilities to consortium led by London-based EllisDon Corp.
The projects will include a new 156-bed mental health care treatment centre that will be built adjacent to Parkwood Hospital in London and a second 89-bed facility for forensic mental health care in St. Thomas dealing with patients involved in the criminal justice system.

Controversial mental health restructuring in London would see 70 beds cut from the system.

Women bites police officer

A woman who appeared to be drunk in a Chatham Tim Hortons has been charged with assaulting three cops, police say.
While at a Tim Hortons at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, deputy chief Clare Wiersma saw a woman bothering customers. He asked the woman to leave the coffee shop but she argued with the off-duty chief. Police said the woman appeared to be intoxicated and, during the argument, hit another customer.

Police said the woman was "resistive" and scratched Wiersma, "drawing blood."

Baby Joseph airlifted to St. Louis hospital

Parents accepted an offer to fly him to the U.S. against the advice of a London hospital.
Thirteen-month-old Joseph Maraachli, who doctors say is in a vegetative state with no hope of recovery, was flown out of London at 10:20 p.m. Sunday by private plane to St. Louis, Mo.

Against the “strongest possible medical advice” from experts in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, LHSC said, Baby Joseph’s parents accepted an offer to fly him to the faith-based ­Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis
