Convicted murderer to seek early parole in London

Lang Van Nguyen, 46, was convicted 18 years ago of first-degree murder in the death of his distant cousin, Phuong Tran, 19.

After his assessment at Millhaven penitentiary, he was transferred to the medium-security Collin’s Bay Institution where he stayed until May 1, 2002.
He upgraded his English skills there and participated in anger-management programs, for which he received high marks.

Springbank dam blocking fish heading upstream

The final report of an unusual, three-year study shows that new gates of the dam are blocking some fish heading upstream.
So why care what happens to a bunch of fish many people have never heard of before - white suckers, smallmouth bass and shorthead redhorse?
The provincial work permit that allowed London to rebuild the dam required the city to monitor migration to make sure fish can move through the new open gates of the dam as easily as they did before construction.

6 years for drunk driving

A drunken five-block drive sent a London man to prison for his eleventh impaired driving-related conviction.
"Enough is enough," said Superior Court Justice Helen Rady when she sentenced William Thornton, 57, to six years for driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millitres of blood and driving while prohibited.
Thornton, who has two previous prison sentences under his belt and a lifetime prohibition from driving, was given credit for nine months in pre-sentence custody, cutting his sentence to 5 1/2 years.

Police looking for 3 fraud suspects.

 London Police are looking for assistance in identifying three suspects wanted in a fraud investigation.

On January 12, the three male suspects entered several local Walmart stores and purchased electronic goods using stolen credit cards. The three suspects are shown below:

Basia Bulat at home at Aeolian hall

The venue was packed for Basia Bulat, a folk songstress who hails from Toronto but accredits most of her early song writing to London.
Bulat studied English at the University of Western Ontario and started playing gigs in the city with classmates and friends Allison Stewart and Holly Coish. Stewart and Coish have since become fixtures of Bulat’s touring band along with her brother Bobby and newest addition bassist Ben Whitely.

Deal freezes wages

London politicians have ratified the contract for a small union representing city hall workers at Dearness Home in which they accepted a wage freeze for 2011.
The deal with Local 1.ON of the Service Employees International Union, which includes eight full-time and five part-time Dearness Home office workers, gives no wage hike this year and 1.9% raises annually from 2012 to 2014.
The deal also gives each worker a lump sum of between $270 and $520.

Drunk driver caught doing 190

Chatham-Kent OPP arrested an impaired driver going 190 km/hr on the 401 early Tuesday morning.
Responding to a report from a concerned motorist, OPP pulled over a driver at 3:13 a.m. after clocking the vehicle driving between 141 km/hr and 190 km/hr. The driver had double the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
A 27-year-old Windsor man faces nine charges, including racing a motor vehicle, impaired driving, exceeding 80 milligrams blood alcohol content and driving with a G1 license on a prohibited highway.

Man allegedly beat father with bag of canned goods

A 33-year-old local man is behind bars after he allegedly beat his father with a bag of canned goods, because his father refused to give him money.
Police in this southern Ontario town said the accused went to his parents' home and asked his father for money.
Police say the father refused but offered to feed him.

The son became enraged. The man picked up the bag of canned goods, swung it around and then hit his father in the head and thigh.

London man drowns in Mexico as family watches

LONDON, Ont. - A 49-year-old Canadian man drowned in Cancun, Mexico, while vacationing with his family.
William "George" Gilbert of London. Ont., was swimming in the ocean with his two teenage sons, Josh and Sam, on Thursday when the three got into trouble in the rough waters.
Lifeguards on duty managed to rescue the two boys, but couldn't get to Gilbert.
Finally, the lifeguards were able to reach Gilbert and bring him ashore, where a vacationing American doctor tried to resuscitate him .

Radiation from Japan detected in B.C.

In the wake of the ongoing nuclear instability in Japan, authorities in British Columbia say that radiation monitors in the province have detected "minute amounts" of radiation from the reactors in Japan. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) said Monday that Health Canada had informed the centre about the radiation detection.

The amounts are "negligible" and do not pose a health risk, the BCCDC said.
These are not cause for concern, and are smaller than the normal day-to-day fluctuations typically seen in B.C."

Storm warning issued Mar 22

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Tuesday calling for freezing rain, ice pellets and snow across the London region later today.
An extended period of freezing rain is forecast for an area stretching from Sarnia to London and south to Chatham and St. Thomas.
Precipitation is expected to develop along a warm front that will reach Southwestern Ontario late this afternoon.
At first, it will start as rain, but as temperatures drop will change to freezing rain and ice pellets.

Man only sentenced to 4 years

A Walkerton man has been sentenced to four and a half years for shaking his girlfriend's toddler.
Court heard Terry Clarkson, 28, was left in charge of the 18-month-old boy on Nov. 21, 2009, when his girlfriend went shopping.
When she returned, Clarkson said the boy had fallen out of bed, but the mother found the boy couldn't sit up or hold his head up and was vomiting.
They took the boy to the hospital, where he was airlifted to London.
