Shootings scares residents

At least seven bullets were fired in two London shootings -- only 10 km apart -- in less than two hours Wednesday night.
The first sounds of gunfire rang out about 7 p.m. near Kipps Lane and Arbour Glen Cres.
"There was an altercation between two groups of males," said Const. Dennis Rivest, a police spokesperson.
Someone from one of the groups fired four shots into the side of a vehicle before several males fled the scene, Rivest said.

Fanshawe insists downtown deal still in motion

Fanshawe College officials are rebuffing rumours their plans to build a much-vaunted campus in downtown London could be in peril.
Amid renewed focus on the rejuvenation of downtown, Fanshawe officials said Thursday they are inching closer to completing a $20-million deal with city hall to put down roots in the core.
"We're moving closer and closer to reaching a conclusion," Bernice Hull, Fanshawe's vice-president of administration, said, adding they are "very" close to finishing the deal.

Firefighters campout for a good cause

It hasn't been ideal camping weather for six London firefighters spending three days on the Covent Garden Market roof.
They've endured more than 48 hours of continuous rain, powerful winds and cold weather in an effort to raise money for muscular dystrophy.
But the firefighters aren't scared of a little discomfort -- especially when it's for a good cause.
All money raised will be used to improve the quality of life for people living with neuromuscular disorders.

Surgeons donate $1.5 M

Orthopedic surgeons at The University of Western Ontario's medical school will give $1.5 million dollars for research and education to honour the first orthopedic chair at Western, Dr. J.C. Kennedy.
The donation will be matched by the university to create a $3 million endowed chair July 1 that officials hope will enable Western to better recruit and retain top talent.
