Man dead, police hurt in collisions

A London police officer, at the scene of a fatal crash in west London, was struck early Saturday by a driver who’s now facing alcohol-related charges.

The chain-reaction played out over about two hours early Saturday on Col. Talbot Rd. near the on-ramps to Highway 401 and Highway 401, police say.

The first collision happened just minutes after midnight at the intersection of Col. Talbot and Decker Dr., a crash so severe police say both vehicles landed off the road.

A 74-year-old man from St. Thomas — his name hasn’t yet been made public, pending notification of family — died at the scene, police say.

John Ewart, 51, of Dutton is facing a raft of charges, including impaired driving causing death.

Man robbed in downtown attack

A man was beaten up and robbed by a group of five people in downtown London early Saturday, city police say.

The man was walking south near the intersection of Richmond and Kent streets at about 3:30 a.m. when he was approached by five men, one of whom started a conversation with the victim.

A second man, however, grabbed the victim’s “property,” police say, and one man struck him in the face before the group ran off.

The victim’s injuries are described as minor.

Young girl hit by car

A four-year-old girl is in hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Sarnia this weekend.

Police in that city say the youngster ran into the path of a vehicle heading east on Kathleen Ave. at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Citizens at the scene were able to free her from under the vehicle, police say. She was sent to Bluewater hospital, then transferred to a London hospital due to a serious leg injury.

The 48-year-old driver, police say, was determined to not be at fault.
