Man shot during confrontation
One man is in serious condition after being shot during a fight at a Kipps Lane variety store Sunday night.
A group of males entered the Mac's at 1050 Kipps Lane around 11:37 p.m. and started fighting, police said.
Another male armed with a gun burst into the store and began shooting, police said.
"Several shots were fired striking one adult male, while the remaining involved parties fled the scene," police said.
Police cruisers and a forensic identification van were at the store, located east of Arbour Glen Cres., Monday morning.

Sinkhole hits commuters
London drivers are steering clear of Richmond and Oxford streets to avoid a major sinkhole - and a giant headache - Monday morning.
The city's second major sinkhole in the past four years started Saturday after a manhole tunnel caved in, creating a gaping hole that kept growing.
As the work week commute began Monday, drivers sought alternative routes, causing traffic jams on streets running parallel to Richmond.
Long lines of vehicles formed on Talbot, Waterloo, and Colborne streets.
Meanwhile, there were few drivers bold enough to drive down the single lanes remaining open on Oxford.

Outlaws back in town
The rebirth of the Outlaws motorcycle gang in London is raising the spectre of clashes with their traditional rivals, the Hells Angels.
But the head of the province’s biker unit says there seems to be enough crime in Southwestern Ontario to go around.
“There appears to be enough business to allow them to co-exist,” said Det.-Sgt. Len Isnor of the Ontario Biker Enforcement Unit.
“Having said that, if the market gets to a saturation point, that could lead to problems.”
A person with a past on the other side of the law suggested the area crime business has room for both, but the rivals will wrestle for control.
“I think you will find there is going to be some violence, but it won’t be direct,” he said.
The clubs will use street gangs and prospects to intimidate each other, rather than go head-to-head, he said.
The Hells Angels also are quietly trying to beef up their numbers, said the source, who has knowledge of the local biker scene.
Both the source and Isnor agreed the Outlaws are back and are going to make it known.
Police believe the gang has an east-end clubhouse, painted in traditional black and white Outlaws colours, Isnor said.
The Free Press source said the Outlaws will wear their colours whenever possible to prove they’re a full chapter: “They’ll have a visible presence this summer.”
That’s a contrast to the Hells Angels, who have kept a low profile in London for the last few years while consolidating control on the drug market and other criminal activities, the source said.
“They have more money and support than the Outlaws. They are more corporate. The Outlaws still think they are playing cowboys and Indians.”
A London chapter of the Outlaws began in 1977 but by 2002 was faltering. The Hells Angels had moved into Ontario and convinced dozens of area Outlaws to join them.
A provincewide raid called Project Retire in 2002 put dozens of Ontario Outlaws, including some local leaders, behind bars.
Some remaining Outlaws and their supporters tried to start a Bandidos chapter, but that experiment ended in disaster with the massacre of eight Bandidos in 2006 and prison terms for six others guilty of the killings.
Two years ago, the city had the Outlaws clubhouse on Egerton St. demolished.
But the main targets in Project Retire have either served their time or had their charges dropped.
In London, “the Outlaws never really left,” Isnor said. Their membership fell below the three necessary for a chapter, he said. “They were there. They went into dormancy.”
The Outlaws’ roots in the city could help keep peace with the Hells Angels.

Grease fire causes 55K in damages
Cooking grease caused a $55,000 kitchen fire, injuring one person and closing a busy city road for about an hour.
London firefighters were called to a house on Wharncliffe Rd. N., near Oxford St. W. about 9 p.m. Saturday and found smoke pouring out of the back of the house and a working fire in the kitchen.
Firefighters quickly put out the blaze, which caused extensive smoke and fire damage throughout the house.
Paramedics treated one person at the scene for burns to the right hand.
Firefighters closed a stretch of Wharncliffe Rd. for about an hour while they battled the blaze.

London police are looking for a man after another was robbed and punched in the face.
A 19-year-old man was walking in the area of Edmonton and Dundas streets about 6 p.m. Friday when a man approached him, demanded he empty his pockets and punched him.
The robber fled with a cell phone.
Police are looking for a 5'6" white man, about 130 lbs, between 19 and 21 years old, clean shaven with a shaved head. He was wearing a back shirt with purple graffiti and blue jeans at the time.

A 21-year-old man has been charged after a woman was struck in the back of the head with a brick in Wortley Village.
London police said two 19-year-old women and a 21-year-old man were walking on Wortley Rd. near Victor St. just before 3 a.m. Saturday when they got into an argument with another man they didn't know.
Police said the man walked down a side street and returned seconds later. Police said that's when one of the women was struck with a brick in the back of the head.

London police said two of the men grabbed his arms while the third punched him in the stomach several times. One then grabbed his wallet, took $80 and fled.
Police are looking for three Middle Eastern men, aged 18 to 25 and six-feet tall. Two were wearing black hoodies and jeans at the time of the robbery. The third was wearing a red zip-up style hoodie. All three were wearing black bandanas covering their faces.

Women assaulted at casino
SARNIA - A Sarnia man who held a broken glass to his former girlfriend's neck behind the bar at the Point Edward casino was sentenced to almost four years in jail Tuesday.
Joshua Atkinson, 37, pleaded guilty in Sarnia court to assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and violating a non-communication order with the woman while in jail in March.
An OPP officer approached Atkinson, who had his arm around the woman's neck, after casino staff noticed odd behaviour.
Atkinson went behind the bar, walking back and forth with the woman.
A video recording the March 16 incident taken by a casino camera was played in court.
Atkinson broke a glass and held it to the woman's neck. She told the court when he broke the glass she'd been quite worried. At one point Atkinson said he should kill himself.

London and area lost 6,400 jobs over the last 12 months, but the unemployment rate has changed little, as job seekers are giving up, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
London's unemployment rate remains unchanged for the third consecutive month, 8.3%, as the national average dropped to 7.4% from 7.6% and the Ontario rate stayed at 7.9%.
But total employment in the city and region dropped more than 2%, said Vincent Ferrao, workforce analyst with the federal agency.

Man stabbed
London police used surveillance footage to identify a suspect in a Friday morning stabbing.
A male was approached from behind by a 20-year-old man and stabbed near Richmond and Kent streets around 2:14 a.m., police said.
The suspect fled, but police located him using footage from a downtown camera.
The injured male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene after a crash Thursday night on Bluewater Highway north of Grand Bend.
Police said the crash happened about 10 p.m. when a driver pulled out to pass another northbound vehicle.
The vehicle drifted onto the west shoulder and then into the ditch, striking a tree. It came to rest at the Oakwood Golf Course, Huron OPP said.
The highway was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated.
Name of the male driver has not been released.

City hall defends one-year ban
London’s one-year ban on new methadone clinics was defended by city hall officials Tuesday as a formal challenge against the temporary restriction began.
It’s been six months since the red-hot issue of where such treatment centres should be allowed was cooled by city council approving the year-long moratorium, giving staff until this November to examine permanent rules.
But that so-called interim control bylaw has been challenged by a provincewide chain of clinics, whose appeal went to the Ontario Municipal Board Tuesday.
“The point I’d like to emphasize is the study we’re doing is not relating just to land-use impacts,” John Fleming, the city’s planning boss, told the OMB hearing.

- A man who subjected three successive girlfriends to horrific violence was sentenced to more than five and a half years in jail Tuesday.
Marcell Sydney Page, 26, of Sarnia, had previously been convicted of 35 offences against the women during separate relationships with them between 2005 and 2009.

Londoner Robert Vanier appeared in a Toronto courtroom Tuesday on a charge of threatening to kill an investment counsellor and former business associate.
The former president of Onco Petroleum is charged with threatening to kill Jim Hunter, 74, during phone calls made to Hunter's Toronto home on Oct. 20, 2009.

London transit driver attacked
A London Transit bus driver was beaten after a car rear-ended his bus downtown Monday.
A car crashed into a bus at Dundas and Wellington streets around 2:30 p.m.
The driver of the car got out of his car, got on the bus and attacked the bus driver and demanded money, police said.
The driver had minor injuries.
While in custody, the suspect threatened an officer.
A 28-year-old London man, Terry Philip, faces multiple charges, including assault and uttering death threats.

A London police officer, at the scene of a fatal crash in west London, was struck early Saturday by a driver who’s now facing alcohol-related charges.
The chain-reaction played out over about two hours early Saturday on Col. Talbot Rd. near the on-ramps to Highway 401 and Highway 401, police say.
The first collision happened just minutes after midnight at the intersection of Col. Talbot and Decker Dr., a crash so severe police say both vehicles landed off the road.
A 74-year-old man from St. Thomas — his name hasn’t yet been made public, pending notification of family — died at the scene, police say.
John Ewart, 51, of Dutton is facing a raft of charges, including impaired driving causing death.

Young girl hit by car
A four-year-old girl is in hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Sarnia this weekend.
Police in that city say the youngster ran into the path of a vehicle heading east on Kathleen Ave. at about 5 p.m. Saturday.
Citizens at the scene were able to free her from under the vehicle, police say. She was sent to Bluewater hospital, then transferred to a London hospital due to a serious leg injury.

London police are looking for a suspect after a cell phone kiosk in Masonville Mall was robbed at gunpoint Sunday.
A lone male approached staff at the Virgin Mobile kiosk in the mall around 12:30 p.m. and brandished a handgun in his waist, police said.
He fled after getting an undisclosed amount of merchandise.
Nobody was hurt, police said.
The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s, five-foot-five, 150 lbs, wearing aviator style sunglasses, a long sleeve black shirt with red and white stripes and dark jeans.

Daniel Jimenez-Acosta, 42, is charged in the Wednesday slaying of Patricia Pasheco-Hernandez, 41, police said Thursday.
She was found dead at the couple's home at 64 Adswood Rd. in the Westminster Park area shortly before noon.
Neighbours say the couple have three children.

Police investigate gun fire
London police are investigating after a bullet hole was found through a home on Spiritwood Court Thursday. Police were called to the area at 6:15 a.m. When they arrived, residents inside the home told investigators they awoke about 3 a.m. to knocking at their door. Moments later, they heard a noise they thought was a firecracker and saw two people running away. When they awoke again in the morning, they found a bullet hole in their door and called police.

Russian droids roam City Hall
Mayor Joe Fontana liked his robot so much he named him, not surprisingly "Joe," took him for a spin and offered to plunk down $5,000 to buy one on the spot.
Two robots, looking a little like modern-day R2D2s, spent Thursday rolling around the second floor of City Hall as their Russian manufacturers made a pitch to Fontana and city staff for them to start making the 'bots in London.

Victim asks public for help
Two men who beat another so badly he's in hospital are on the loose and St. Thomas police are asking for the public's help to find them.
The two men entered a Wellington St residence about 6 p.m. Wednesday and severely beat the resident.
The resident was taken to St. Thomas General Hospital then transferred to London Health Sciences Centre.
One of the men may have been of Hispanic descent. They were seen fleeing the area in a green van, police said.

Man arrested in suspicious death
London police have arrested a man after a woman's body was found in a townhouse in the city's south end.
Police are investigating a "suspicious death" at 64 Adswood Rd. after being called this afternoon.
Police but confirmed the two people knew each other. Neighbours said the couple had three children.

SIU investigates death
Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a senior citizen fractured a bone while being arrested by London police.
The 71-year-old woman was injured when police arrested her on Grosvenor St. Monday, said Frank Phillips, a spokesperson with the Special Investigations Unit.
London police went to a residence on Grosvenor St. for an investigation about 7 p.m. When officers arrived they dealt with two people in the home.
The 71-year-old woman was taken to University Hospital, where she was treated.
It’s not known why the woman was arrested.
The SIU investigates reports involving police, where there’s been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Woodstock police won’t confirm they’re investigating missing money within the Woodstock Wildcats Girls Hockey Association.
"In an effort to protect the integrity of any potential investigation that may result, the Woodstock police service will not be making any further comment at this time," police said in a release Monday afternoon.
Police said they were contacted Monday by the association’s executive, who reported “financial inconsistencies” within the organization.
QMI Agency has learned that $45,000 has gone missing at the organization, and that there may have been other financial issues in the last two years as well.

A would-be, middle-aged female bank robber warned she had explosives and demanded cash, but got away with nothing Monday afternoon.

Man charged after chase
A motorist faces charges after a chase through downtown London. Two police officers were in a marked van at Wellington and Horton streets about 4 p.m. Saturday when they saw a car weave through lanes at high speed heading east on Horton. The driver refused to stop and turned north on Colborne St.,going through two red lights. Police broke off the chase. A few minutes later, police spotted the vehicle parked on Dundas St. A 22-year old London man is charged with dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, theft under $5,000 and breaching probation order.

Lambton OPP were called to the river near Lazy Lane, east of Port Franks, about 2:30 p.m. after someone reported a body in the river.
Police and the Northville fire department pulled it out.
The man's body was sent to London for an autopsy, which police said, will be done in the next few days.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages and they'll release more information when they have it.

City hall expects 150 Londoners to attend Saturday when it holds a first-ever conference aimed at improving citizen engagement in civic politics.
The so-called community engagement task force will use the citizen input to help craft a policy guiding how the public is notified on issues and how feedback is collected.

Researchers at Western are doing their part to keep the crew safe aboard the space shuttle Endeavour after it launches Monday.

The program, which can accept about 40 students, is among 10 transportation technology programs at the campus.

A SUV lies upside down after a collision on Second St. at Oxford St. on Tuesday in London.
Police said the northbound SUV was struck by a westbound car that ran through a red light, flipping the vehicle onto its roof shortly after 3 p.m.

The software giant said the buyout of Luxembourg-based Skype's technology would "enhance" Microsoft's current portfolio of real-time communications products and services.

A secluded area in the Limberlost public-housing complex has become a haven for drug dealers and users, residents say.
Last week, playground equipment was taken down by the city of due to safety violations.

Colin Mackenzie Rutherford, 27, is seen sitting in front of a canvas background in the undated video, posted online Sunday. He is wearing a grey coat and green pants, and sits with his hands on his knees.

Family members reported Maria Correia, 50, was missing Wednesday after she failed to return from shopping for groceries.

Failed mom jailed 2 years
Sara Whittington, 36, was jailed today for two years less a day for the disappearance of her infant daughter, Abbygail Dice in September, 2007.
Superior Court Justice Peter Hockin said Whittington had caused "great harm" to her family, the baby's father's family and the community by not admitting to where she disposed the body of the baby.
Whittington was convicted of offering an indignity to a body after a trial.
Whittington told Hockin she "failed (Abbygail ) as a mother."

In the London-St. Thomas area the number of people employed grew by 800 last month but that was offset by another 1,000 people entering the labour force.
Statistics Canada said the national economy gained 58,300 jobs.
BMO Capital Markets called the April jobs numbers "a show of strength which should dampen some budding concerns that the North American economy was losing serious steam."

Standoff started with traffic violation
A three-hour standoff with a man who locked himself inside an SUV in Wortley Village Wednesday started after the suspect cut off an OPP cruiser on Wharncliffe Rd.
Officers followed the man to Craig St. where they pulled over the vehicle.
“He basically refused to speak to the officers, so they called for city police to attend to assist with dealing with this male,” said Const. Bob Hogan, a police spokesperson.
Police noticed the SUV had what appeared to be bulletproof windows.

A male and a female were walking on Hale St. near Trafalgar St. around 1:30 a.m. when two men approached them on BMX bikes.
One of the riders attacked the male, while the second rider stabbed the male in the back with a pocketknife, police said.
The male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An altercation between two groups of males around 2 a.m. led to a fight, police said.
A male was stabbed and taken to hospital in serious condition, police said.
He remains in hospital where his condition has been upgraded to stable.

Tombstone uncovered in backyard
The owners of a Major St. home in London uncovered a tombstone in their backyard while doing some spring gardening.
The homeowners, who moved into the house last year, were digging up shrubs and trees on their east end property Monday afternoon when they made the discovery.
They immediately called police.
Police are investigating where the gravestone came from and how it ended up in the backyard.
The tombstone is inscribed with "Varga" and "Emrick 1898 Husband" and "Karoline 1896 -- 1969"

A person was taken to hospital with cuts after a knife-point robbery in London Monday.
The individual was on Gammage St. shortly after 9 p.m. when a suspect with a knife demanded their wallet, police said.
The two struggled and the suspect fled after his eye was injured in the fight.
Police are looking for a suspect who is described as white male in his early 20's, 5'10, short brown hair, with a thin face and thin build.

ATV rams cop cruiser
A St. Marys man faces charges after allegedly ramming a cruiser with all-terrain vehicle in an attempt to evade police.
Officers tried to pull over an ATV on Perth Rd. 130 after observing the driver operate the vehicle in an “unsafe manner,” Perth OPP said.
When the officer tried to get out of the cruiser the ATV rammed the driver’s side door, police said.
Police arrested the suspect at his residence.
A 27-year-old man faces multiple charges.

London man accused of speading HIV
Police are looking for more complainants after an HIV positive London man was charged with aggravated sexual assault. The incident took place in February 2010.
Daniel Gracie, 33, is accused of sexually assaulting a female who is now infected with HIV, police said.
Gracie knew he was HIV positive at the time of the alleged assault and may have had unprotected sex with other women after learning about his condition in 2002, police said.
Gracie is in police custody.

Armed man robs church
A drunken man wielding a stick stormed into a London church service and demanded cash on Sunday.
Shortly before 4 p.m., two parishioners at a downtown church asked a man who was drinking on the steps to leave the property. The man attacked the two men, ripping the shirt of one and throwing a piece of concrete at the other, police said.
Armed with a wooden stick and a brick, the man went into the church and interrupted the service, demanding money.

Delinquents assault London man
A London man was assaulted with a skateboard and shot with a pellet gun outside his home early Sunday morning.
The victim said he heard a group of males yelling and making noises outside, police said.
The man ask the teens to be quiet, and they went after him, assaulting him with a skateboard, and shooting at him five or six times with a pellet gun, police said.
The suspects were described as being white males, between 16 and 19 years old.

Another senior dead in collision
An 85-year-old man died Saturday night, after a crash at Wonderland and Medway roads.
Middlesex OPP had not yet released the identity of the elderly man who had been driving south on Wonderland when his car approached a stop sign at Medway, then "entered the intersection and collided with an eastbound (car)," according to a Sunday morning news release.
Paramedics took the man to hospital, where he later died, police said.

Shootings scares residents
At least seven bullets were fired in two London shootings -- only 10 km apart -- in less than two hours Wednesday night.
The first sounds of gunfire rang out about 7 p.m. near Kipps Lane and Arbour Glen Cres.
"There was an altercation between two groups of males," said Const. Dennis Rivest, a police spokesperson.
Someone from one of the groups fired four shots into the side of a vehicle before several males fled the scene, Rivest said.

Fanshawe College officials are rebuffing rumours their plans to build a much-vaunted campus in downtown London could be in peril.

Firefighters campout for a good cause
It hasn't been ideal camping weather for six London firefighters spending three days on the Covent Garden Market roof.
They've endured more than 48 hours of continuous rain, powerful winds and cold weather in an effort to raise money for muscular dystrophy.
But the firefighters aren't scared of a little discomfort -- especially when it's for a good cause.
All money raised will be used to improve the quality of life for people living with neuromuscular disorders.

Surgeons donate $1.5 M
Orthopedic surgeons at The University of Western Ontario's medical school will give $1.5 million dollars for research and education to honour the first orthopedic chair at Western, Dr. J.C. Kennedy.
The donation will be matched by the university to create a $3 million endowed chair July 1 that officials hope will enable Western to better recruit and retain top talent.

Gas prices hit record high
With London gas prices hitting a record $1.38/litre on Thursday, drivers are facing a lose/lose scenario, says an energy analyst.
Spencer Knipping, an advisor to the Ontario Ministry of Energy, said gas prices will only come down if frightened consumers tighten their belts, causing a sharp slide in the economy.

Shooting victim in serious condition
A man was taken to hospital in serious condition after a shooting Wednesday night in north London, police said.
Police went to a house on Aldersbrook Rd. and Gainsborough Rd. shortly before 9 p.m. and found a male with gunshot wounds.
The shooting occurred at another location a short distance away, and the man fled to a nearby residence that called 911, police said.
The man's injuries aren't life threatening, police said.

Senior killed in collison
An 80-year-old woman is dead after a two-car crash on Northville Rd. Wednesday night.
The woman was making a left hand turn into a driveway when it's alleged her vehicle was struck from behind by a northbound vehicle shortly before 5 p.m., police said.
She was taken by ambulance to the Strathroy Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the other vehicle, a male, was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating but no charges yet.

Several tornadoes may have hit
Environment Canada is investigating the possibility several tornadoes hit Southwestern Ontario Wednesday when a line of severe thunderstorms raced across the area.

Kipps Lane shooting update
London police were investigating a report of shots heard in the Kipp's Lane-Arbour Glen Cres. area of the city about 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
Witnesses said they heard what sounded like four gunshots near a townhouse complex, apparently from men in two cars, one of which was left behind and had a bullet hole in its door.
Police said it appears no one was hurt but they remained on the scene overnight as the investigation continued.

Constance Fuhrman, 43, was found dead in her 10th floor apartment.
Her estranged husband, Kenneth Fuhrman of Thorndale was found on the grass outside and appeared to have fallen from an upper apartment.
He was taken to LHSC, where he was pronounced dead.

Needle left in patient's arm
Frail with age and recovering from pneumonia, an 86-year-old London woman was sent home from a London hospital by staff who didn't remove an intravenous needle from her arm, the woman's daughter says.
The needle was full of blood and her bruised arm covered in tape when Helen Bonner was discharged from University Hospital's emergency department last week by a doctor or a nurse.

Melissa Garland, who has been under house arrest since last August, appeared at the Oxford County Court House shackled and wearing a grey sweater and a ponytail.
A ban prevents the publication of any evidence heard at the bail hearing.
Garland was originally charged last August with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence, causing the death to the infant.

Attack not a hate crime
A former London Silverback football player was granted a conditional discharge for assaulting a con man who happened to be gay.
Superior Court Justice John Desotti said Alex Myros' assault on Brandon Wright wasn't a gay bashing.
"I do not consider this to be a hate crime offence. This is not an attack on an individual because of his sexuality," the judge said.
Instead, Desotti said Myros assault was a reaction that he was being "potentially defrauded, potentially misled."

A Toronto man who strangled his son to death in a London, Ont., hotel room and found not guilty by reason of insanity is running as an independent candidate in Huntsville, Ont.

Police have issued an Amber Alert for a missing three-year-old girl from Sault Ste. Marie who is believed to have been abducted by her mother.
Leila Elizabeth May has blond hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing a green sweatshirt, pink rain jacket, pink rain boots with rabbit faces, and Spiderman socks and underwear, Ontario Provincial Police said.

With little more than a week to go before the federal election, some Londoners have their mind firmly made up.
They’re not voting, no matter what.
“I’d only vote if there was a place to mark none-of-the-above,” said one woman as she headed into a south London mall.

Man beaten, stabbed
A 21-year-old was attacked by eight other men Saturday as he walked through the Wheable Adult Education Centre parking lot.
London police said the victim was beaten, stabbed, and then robbed of his backpack.
He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The attack by the unknown eight men happened about 11 p.m.

Break-in suspect inside
A Londoner returning home early Thursday not only found his home had been broken into, but also could hear the suspect still inside. Police surrounded the home in the area of Cheapside St. and Thornton Ave. and arrested a male. A 24-year-old Londoner is facing charges of breaking and entering and possession of break-in tools.

An idiot is being blamed for a two-car collision on Thursday.
"good Samaritan, gone wrong,", a white car trying to turn in to the Harvey's restaurant from the southbound lanes, but was stymied by a long line of northbound traffic stopped on Wharncliffe Road.
A northbound driver paused in the left lane to allow the white car to turn into the restaurant.
Unfortunately, no one checked the curb lane.

The family of a London area teenager who died nearly three years ago has filed a $2.45 million lawsuit against the TVDSB.
Jordan Gallant was 17 and a student at West Elgin Secondary school when he took his own life, May 14, 2008.
Gallant submitted an essay in which he expressed sorrow over a breakup and stated he wanted to kill himself.
The boy's teacher was negligent for not informing her supervisors or her student's family about the disturbing essay.

Teen charged in fatal collision
Police have charged a female youth in a fatal crash near Palmerston that killed a Wellesley teen.
The crash happened on March 20 when 17-year-old Lyndal Huber and two 15-year-old male passengers were driving west on Line 92 south east of Palmerston.
The male driver was pronounced dead on the scene, and the two passengers weren't injured, police said.
A female youth from the Harriston area is charged with careless driving.

The crash happened on March 20 when 17-year-old Lyndal Huber and two 15-year-old male passengers were driving west on Line 92 south east of Palmerston.
The male driver was pronounced dead on the scene, and the two passengers weren't injured, police said.

Baby Joseph is going home.
The Maraachli family is bringing their 14-month-old son back to their Windsor home Thursday after the infant, who suffers from a progressive neurological disease, underwent a tracheotomy on March 21 at a St. Louis, Mo., hospital.
The tracheotomy, which created an opening into Joseph's windpipe through an incision in his neck, was a success, Dr. Robert Wilmott, chief of pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon and Saint Louis University School of Medicine, said in a release.

Cat burglred
A St. Thomas theft gives a new meaning to the term cat burglar.
A 22-year-old man faces charges after a cat was stolen from a St. Thomas animal rescue shelter on Wednesday.
Thankfully, the furry feline didn't use up any of its nine lives, and was returned to the shelter in good health, police said.

Toyota shutdowns expected
Slowdowns at area Toyota plants have been extended until June due to the ongoing parts shortage following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Employees at the Woodstock facility were notified yesterday that the plant will be shut down between May 23-27.
Production will also be halted on Monday and Fridays, with cars only being built on the day shift Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
More slowdowns are anticipated.

London holding Canadian baseball HOF ceremony
A made-in-London event will now be part of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame's induction ceremony.
A fund raising event featuring 2011 inductee Tom Henke, the legendary Blue Jays pitcher, along with hall of famer Fergie Jenkins and Montreal Expos star Steve Rogers, will be held in London on the Friday of induction weekend.
It has honoured some of the biggest names in Canadian baseball history - including last year, when Roberto Alomar was inducted.

Husband's ashes stolen
Thieves broke into the apartment of a 91-year-old London woman and stole her most treasured item: her husband's ashes.
The widow, whose husband died in 2001, was hoping to be reunited with her partner of 53 years when she dies and is buried with his ashes.
The woman was in the hospital recovering from surgery when the break-in happened at her apartment in a seniors' residence, and her daughter said she can't bear to break the news to her mom.

Diamond Aircraft is asking Industry Canada to give it about $8 million immediately so its laid-off workers can be recalled.

Half-naked woman with bird in car arrested
Police in Kitchener, Ont., say officers arrested a woman Sunday who was driving while only partially dressed and with a pet bird flying loose in her car.
At 3:16 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police said the 58-year-old woman was driving down a street while continuously blowing her horn. Concerned for the driver's well-being, police tried to pull the car over. But police say the car hit a city bus and then another vehicle before officers were able to arrest the driver.

Personal records missing
Personal information for about 4,500 children who have been clients of speech therapy and hearing programs offered at the University of Western Ontario is missing, the university says.
The missing records include names, addresses, phone numbers, genders, birth dates, doctor information, school and child-care information and, in 142 cases, OHIP numbers of clients who took part in two programs between 1999 and 2010.
UWO announced it was missing a USB memory stick containing client records.

Nearly 3,000 bags of litter were picked up during Saturday’s 16th annual London Clean & Green event that drew Londoners to roadsides and other public spaces across the city.
The city works with several groups to run the annual post-winter clean-up: Joe Kool’s, Amway, Try Recycling, London police, Pillar Nonprofit Network and the London-Middlesex Housing Corp.

The Ontario Federation of Home and School Associations -- akin to a PTA -- marked its 95th anniversary with a conference that examined the new-age pressures facing children, notably overall school safety in all grades.
"A lot of our members are here to be sure our children are in an environment that's safe," said group president Corinne Wolsey of Kincardine.

One dead after collision
A man is dead after a motorcycle crash sent him and another person to hospital in Sarnia this weekend.
Police continued on Sunday their investigation into the single-vehicle crash, which occurred at the intersection of Finch Dr. and Cobblestone St. The time of the crash was not made public by police.
On Sunday, police said the man who was driving the motorcycle had died as a result of the crash.

Perth County OPP are urging rural residents west of St. Marys to stay indoors as they deal with an armed man barricaded inside a home.
Police were called to the home, on Line 4, west of St. Mary’s, at around 5 p.m. Saturday.

A police dog helped London cops nab a suspect in a Saturday night break-in at an east-end home.
Police say homeowners returned to their Huron St. home at about 11 p.m. Saturday to find a break-in underway. They contacted police.

Gabriele DelBianco is charged for incidents that occurred between 1983 and 1986, said the London diocese of the Roman Catholic Church, which issued an apology Friday. The diocese said it has received claims from six women regarding sexual misconduct that occurred while they were minors.

Marc Emery to stay in US prison
Marc Emery is staying put in a U.S. prison.
Former Londoner Marc Emery has been denied a prison transfer back to Canada and will likely serve his entire sentence in the U.S.
His Vancouver lawyer, said the Canadian consulate advised Emery, 53, on Friday that he was denied a transfer to Canada by U.S. authorities due to the "seriousness of the offence" and "law enforcement concerns."
Emery is eligible to reapply for a transfer to a Canadian prison in two years.

No Children's Festival in 2011
There will be no London International Children's Festival this year.
"Festival operations are closed," states an announcement posted on the organization's website.
The site says the decision was made "as a result of changing business, fiscal entertainment and community landscape that no longer makes the Children's Festival a viable option for London and surrounding area."
Once a four-day party, the festival scaled back to three days in recent years.

Clinton area death probed
Police were tight-lipped Friday morning about a death investigation in Huron County.
In a news release asking for public assistance, Huron OPP said officers with its crime unit were probing a death that occurred on London Road north of Clinton and was reported at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
"At this time police do not feel foul play is involved," the release stated.

Heavy rain in forecast
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement calling for 15 to 30 millimeters of rain across Southwestern Ontario, including London.
The forecast predicts a low pressure system currently over Eastern Kansas will move slowly northeastward.
The rain is expected to begin overnight over Southwestern Ontario and reach Toronto early Saturday morning.
Brisk southeast winds will accompany the rain.

170,000 contraband cigarettes seized
A routine vehicle stop in Southwold Township led to the seizure of 170,000 contraband cigarettes.
OPP pulled over the vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act violation and searched it. Officers found 17 cases of contraband tobacco.
A 63-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both from Quebec, face charges under the Excise Act for possession of a tobacco not properly stamped.
If convicted, both men could face fines of up to $42,500 or five years in prison.
More charges are pending.

Later Wednesday, the man whose home was rammed with the pickup truck went to hospital and said he was struck by the pickup. He was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.
The man with stab wounds, identified as John Walker, 52, of London, remains in hospital in critical condition.

Youth arrested threats uttered
A young man is in custody and police are investigating after a teacher was reportedly threatened at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic high school.
Police had few details to release about the incident, which happened at around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
They did say a youth is in custody and that the incident involved "the threat of a weapon."
It's unclear whether the male who was arrested was a student at the school.

London Food Bank spring food drive now underway
The London Food Bank's spring food drive kicks off Friday and with an election looming, organizers hope Londoners still show their generosity.
Last year, 63,150 pounds of non-perishable food and non-food items were donated. Sixty per cent of that was given to other social services agencies, such as The Salvation Army.
About 3,000 families a month use the food bank.
The food bank saw its busiest month March 2010, when 3,477 families turned to it for help.

Two men arrested in assault and robbery of taxi driver.
Two men were arrested Tuesday after an Aboutown Taxi driver was beaten unconscious over the weekend.
Police said the cabbie picked up two men near Dundas and Richmond streets about 3:30 a.m. Saturday and drove them to Windermere Rd. and Doon Dr.
One man tried to pay the fare with a debit card, but it was declined.
The driver was then robbed of a large amount of money.

The mayor told reporters Wednesday a company called PenEquity Realty Corp. is "moving through the process" to finalize a "significant development plan" where the highway meets that major east-west road.
But Fontana, who has pushed the development of lands along the 401 as a key piece of his vision for London's economic development, is optimistic about the possibilities.
"It is going to be an incredible signature piece," he said. "This is going to be a significant development on our (401) corridor."

Downtown Fanshawe deal misses deadline
Council's own deadline to hammer out a deal with Fanshawe College over its proposed downtown campus has passed without a pact - but Joe Fontana is cautioning against alarm.

Man stabbed after collision
A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a bizarre set of events that included a stabbing and car crash.
Around 6:45 am a man stabbed in the area of Quebec and Oxford streets.
The injured man got into a pickup truck and left the area.
Eight minutes later, cops got another call about a crash at Frances and Egerton streets.
A pickup matching the description of the Quebec and Oxford vehicle had struck a red car and fled the scene.

Abduction-murder law wanted
An "abduction-murder" law with a mandatory life sentence and no chance of parole would reduce the number of tragic cases where children are kidnapped and killed.
"Tori Stafford didn't need to die," said Robert Geurts, a former Crown attorney and a defence lawyer for 10 years.
Stafford was killed in April 2009.
Terri-Lynne McClintic, 20, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and received a mandatory life sentence in December, but under the current legislation, McClintic will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

Police H.Q. Asbestos removal to cost an extra $1M
Despite shelling out $34 million to revamp London police headquarters just four years ago, it appears the city isn’t finished paying yet.
In a report to council’s finance committee, police are asking for nearly $1 million over two years — $399,000 in 2011 and $592,000 in 2012 — to remove all remaining asbestos from sections of the Dundas St. building untouched by the renovation.
The asbestos removal wasn’t included in the initial renovation price tag, there wasn’t enough money for it, said Deputy Chief Ian Peer.
